Congratulations to Orange Literacy Volunteer (and Duke PhD candidate) Patrick Alexander who won the African-American Leadership Initiative’s (AALI) Volunteer of the Year Award for 2012. Patrick developed and taught Stepping Stones – a program designed to help inmates transition from GED to college level reading – at the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough. Go Patrick!
Jerry Zeller’s ESOL class won first place in Orange County’s 2011 Ready in 60 Seconds Video Contest! Check out their prize winning video as students Hay Mu, Hsa Moo and Jeff Tshi, along with Orange Literacy Program Coordinator Claire Davis, demonstrate what to pack in a disaster kit.
Tutor David Vetter was featured in Elon University’s e-net news feature on National Alumni Month of Service for his work with our ESOL classes. He works with parents of Efland-Cheeks Elementary School students. And his hard work and dedication have paid off – 75% of our Efland-Cheeks students made progress this year. Phenomenal!!! See his story here.
